New sensor for spectral imaging from space

For earth observation with high signal-to-noise ratio

Spectral imaging is increasingly used in small satellites to gather accurate and detailed data from space about food crops, forestation, mines, water and air quality, etc.

These applications require advanced sensors that:

  • Have a broad spectral range to pick up on a variety of features. 
  • Exhibit high sensitivity to capture even the weakest signals.
  • Are sufficiently robust and stable to withstand shocks, vibrations, and temperature fluctuations.
     

At 2024’s Small Satellite Conference, imec presented a new generation of spectral sensors to fulfill these requirements – with a spectral range of 450-900nm, across-flight resolution of 2048px and a frame rate up to 340 fps.
