More efficient Earth observation thanks to on-chip spectral imaging

With customizable imagers and a flexible production process, imec enables camera and satellite integrators to develop Earth observation systems to monitor and protect our planet.

Advances in miniaturization have made Earth observation satellites more accessible, allowing even smaller organizations to build and launch them.

These satellites monitor critical environmental factors like climate change, water quality, and crop health with unprecedented detail. Key to their success is the use of advanced image sensors, which require high sensitivity and a broad spectral range to capture detailed data.

Imec has developed an innovative on-chip spectral imaging solution, depositing multi- and hyperspectral filters directly onto image sensor chips.

This wafer-level approach results in more compact, robust, and scalable spectral imagers, perfect for space conditions. Also, the integrated design guarantees flawless filter-to-imager alignment and a much higher resilience to shocks, vibrations, and temperature fluctuations—significant advantages in the harsh conditions of space.
