As the boundaries between robots and collaborative robots (cobots) fade, the need for fast, agile, and uncaged robot systems grows rapidly. Today’s cobots typically rely on power- and force-limiting mechanisms for safety, stopping upon contact with an obstacle. However, this inherently restricts their speed and cycle time, as high-speed operation would make collisions unsafe. Industries aiming to deploy high-performance robots in open workspaces—and humanoids that are meant to emerge in our everyday environments—demand higher speeds, requesting a new generation of perception and sensing.
