An Jacobs is a professor at the department of Communication Science of the VUB (Brussels – Belgium). She heads the unit ‘Digital Health and Work’ at SMIT, a research unit of imec at the VUB. Her research is focused on living labs, user-centered design, contributing to the fields of human robot collaboration, person-centered health management with wearables and health apps, as well as on people-centered algorithms in decision support systems in a health and industrial context.

Robots and the IoT are a match made in heaven, a match that will allow robots to move around freely and collaborate with each other and with the people they serve. But enabling that collaboration is more than an engineering challenge. It requires sustained multidisciplinary research into such fields as deep learning, smart planning technology, human-robot interfacing, and technology acceptance. Imec’s research groups are working on all those topics, and have some highly visible projects to integrate and demonstrate progress.
